Description
CalciteVerkhnii Mine (Verchniy Mine), Dalnegorsk, Dalnegorsk Urban District, Primorsky Krai, Russia
5.7 x 5.0 x 4.6 cm (2.24 x 1.97 x 1.81 in)
For decades the Verknii Mine has churned out fabulous Calcite specimens, which have become the staple of this famous east Russian mining locality; this piece is particular is astoundingly bright and glassy, with many of the crystal faces accented by minor striations. The focal point of the specimen is a single stocky, beautifully terminated, gemmy Calcite scalenohedron (measuring 4.0 x 3.1 centimeters) that is aesthetically presented atop a cluster of smaller transparent Calcite crystals. Under UV light the Calcite strongly fluoresces orange (shortwave) and hot pink (longwave); the specimen has a brief, yet strong, phosphorescence when quickly removed from both short and longwave UV light. Originally mined in January of 2002, this specimen was acquired from Bran van Scriver, finding its way into Mr. Potucek's collection. In 2008, this Calcite was purchased by Terry E. Huizing, a seasoned mineral collector who exclusively curated spectacular Calcite specimens. This piece comes with the original collection labels from Mr. Huizing and Mr. Potucek.
Ex. Terry E. Huizing collection.
Ex. T. L. Potucek collection.
More Information: This piece is in excellent condition. There is one very minor repair on the rear view of the main crystal.
