Description
Muonionalusta MeteoriteIron, IVA
Northern Sweden - (67° 48'N, 23° 6'E)
Found: 1906
This complete individual specimen of the fine, iron octahedrite Muonionalusta meteorite is sculptural in its beauty. The heavy rock from space, which landed in Sweden one million years ago, displays a contrast of a slick "skin" and rusty ferrous indentations over the entire surface of the specimen. Muonionalusta is a popular variety among collectors and a wonderful 'arctic' meteorite, making it even more uncommon. Its composition is an iron-nickel alloy, and Muonionalusta is one of only a few meteorites that contains a rare form of shocked Quartz called Stishovite. The first remnants of Muonionalusta, which is theorized to have originally belonged to one of the earliest bodies that eventually shaped our solar system, were first found back in 1906. This rather sizable specimen weighs a very respectable 2.5 kilograms (5.5 lbs).
Overall Measurements: 6.1 x 2.87 x 2.58 inches (15.5 x 7.3 x 6.56cm), weighs 2,494 grams
Provenance: Central Coast Collection
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
