Description

Odessa Meteorite
Iron, IAB-MG
Ector County, Texas, USA - (31° 43'N, 102° 24'W)
Found: 1922

This sculptural individual Odessa iron was found by early meteorite hunter Captain Draeger in the 1940s. An older specimen identification card accompanies this piece. This elongated example has a thin overall structure with shallow, broad regmaglypts over the exterior of this metallic brown offering. Some lighter-colored material is visible over part of the edges of the meteorite. Odessa Crater in Ector County, Texas, is one of only two craters in the United States where meteorite fragments have been proven to be found, the other being the famous Meteor Crater in Arizona. Located in the 'heart' of Texas oil country, Odessa Meteorites were first discovered in the 1920s by prospectors. Collecting from the crater is now prohibited by the City of Odessa, so older specimens like this classic example of the crater-forming meteorite are very difficult to acquire. A visitor center with a small museum has been built adjacent to the Odessa Crater.
Measurements: 4.39 x 1.72 x 0.81 inches (11.16 x 4.37 x 2.07 cm), weighs 118.6 grams

Provenance: Ex. Captain Draeger Collection, The Geoff Notkin Collection
