Description
Canyon Diablo MeteoriteIron, IAB-MG
Meteor Crater, Coconino County
Arizona, USA - (35° 3'N, 111° 2'W)
Found: 1891
While this Canyon Diablo specimen is a superb example with incredible, large "scoop" regmaglypts over the complex thumb printed exterior, it is the provenance and chain of custody of this incredible iron that resulted in it being such a collectible meteorite. Legendary Harvey H. Nininger conducted years of research at the crater site and opened the world's first private meteorite museum nearby Meteor Crater. Nininger number "34.4599" is hand-painted on the piece, and label number "195" is affixed to the specimen. This example was originally part of the Carl Herfurth Collection, an early collector of meteorites, which was purchased by Allan Lang. The weight of "2498 g" is also painted on the iron rounding out the trio of designations on this representation of the iconic American meteorite. The golden-brown form is complex and textural as numerous 'thumbprints' cover the rugged exterior of this superlative display piece of Canyon Diablo.
Measurements: 6.10 x 3.98 x 2.56 inches (15.50 x 10.10 x 6.50 cm), weighs 2,498.2 grams
Provenance: Ex. Carl Herfurth Collection, Ex. Harvey H. Nininger Collection #34.4579, The Geoff Notkin Collection
