Description
Canyon Diablo Meteorite "Shooting Star"Iron, IAB-MG
Meteor Crater, Coconino County
Arizona, USA - (35° 3'N, 111° 2'W)
Found: 1891
Meteor Crater is the most recognizable and best-known meteorite feature on Earth, not to mention the finest and best-preserved large meteorite crater on this planet. "Barringer Crater" was THE first proven meteorite crater and is "renamed" for the geologist, miner, entrepreneur, and visionary Daniel Barringer, who was convinced it was an impact crater. Unfortunately, Barringer made it his life's work to search for what he thought must have been the giant meteorite that formed the crater but was never successful. A famous iron meteorite referred to as Canyon Diablo, representing fragments of the asteroid that formed the Meteor (Barringer) Crater, has been found in and around the area, named for nearby Canyon Diablo. This incredibly sculptural complete individual represents the quintessential American iron meteorite and has a spectacular, highly sculptural form. This meteorite is a favorite of Geoff Notkin's, who stated it was the most striking shape of any Canyon Diablo he had ever seen in the size range. The artistic and natural shape is truly glorious as the piece offers a flame-like form and features broad, scooping regmaglypts on the "mottled" surface of brownish and mauve hues. Named the "Shooting Star" by Notkin, this exquisite example is the consummate display specimen with sharp edges and points. Weighing 1,252 grams (2.76 pounds), the coarse octahedrite has everything going for it and is certain to be a centerpiece in any case.
Measurements: 6.30 x 3.61 x 3.04 inches (16.00 x 9.17 x 7.71 cm), weighs 1,252 grams
Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
