Description

Native Copper
Quincy Mine, Quincy Township, Houghton Co., Michigan, USA
10.6 x 6.6 x 6.2 cm (4.18 x 2.58 x 2.45 in)

As the label suggests, the shape of this hefty Native Copper specimen resembles that of a "golem" or a gingerbread man, due to the five primary growths of Copper that reach out from the center of the specimen. This piece comes from the historic Quincy Mine, which was consistently active with mining operations between the years 1848 to 1931, and again in 1937 to 1945. These Copper crystals are highly modified and striated, almost fin-like when viewed at certain angles, which is unusual even for Michigan material. Much of the Copper is covered in a patina that gives the specimen a silky, smooth sheen and accentuates its signature metallic brown-to-red colors.
