John Douglass was a key figure in Texas art, also working as a frame maker, graphic artist, and gallery owner. After studying with Frank Reaugh and joining his sketching trips through Texas in the 1920s and 1930s, Douglass spent time in Santa Fe and Taos, later studying under Thomas Hart Benton and Boardman Robinson at the Art Students League in New York. Returning to Dallas, he contributed to the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition at Fair Park and opened an art gallery and frame shop to support local artists. Throughout his career, Douglass exhibited widely, painted murals for public buildings, and was active in organizations such as the Dallas Artists League and the Lone Star Printmakers.
