This ornate foldout cover illustration for Ramparts magazine was the final culmination of Edward Sorel's monthly "bestiary" column. Anthropomorphism is a classic tool of political satire and Sorel is now recognized as a modern master of the form. The Aviary (Hawkus Caucus Americanus), played off the distinction between hawks and doves to lampoon pro-war figures such as Everett Dirksen and President Lyndon Johnson. This early work played a significant role in cementing Sorel's standing as a leading satirist of his era. Time magazine acknowledged the bestiary in its 1968 profile of Sorel, listing him among the rising stars in a new generation of caricaturists.
