A Kuyu Double Figure
Democratic Republic of Congo, Middle part of the 20th century

Top of a post or parade staff. A male and female half figure on a tapering oval base, each with deeply grooved scarification marks on faces and torsos. Each similarly carved with a welcoming facial expression. The wood has a variegated brown patina. In good condition, large and small chips from edge of lower part of base. Mounted to a steel base.
