A Rare Wuvulu Island Dance Wand
Bismarck Archipelago, Manus Province, Papua New Guinea, c. 19th to early 20th century

A spare form, like a contemporary abstract or conceptual sculpture, having a great silhouette. Constructed of a fine grained reddish brown wood with attached bone spines disposed like fish bones. The handle delicately carved in a fish tail and scalloped form. The spear end narrows to a fine point. In very good condition, joint of one bone spine to wood cracked but stable. An old sticker one side of the handle with the number 18364.
