A Tatanua Mask
New Ireland, 20th century

A complete mask and headdress. The wood mask painted with blue, black, white, and traces of red pigments, inset shell eyes. The headdress composed of vegetal fibers, a center strip of thin vegetal fibers resembling hair, and red cloth over a cane frame. Large circular ears of stretched bark cloth attached to cane, with long, thin rods rising from the ears wrapped with red cloth and some domestic bird feathers attached. In good condition, the red cloth faded from age, some loose fibers. Mounted with screws to a metal stand.
