Description

A Moche Fine-Line Stirrup Vessel with Battle Scene
Peru, c. 200-900 AD, Early Intermediate Period - Middle Horizon

Hollow earthenware with red, brown and cream paints. One half of the chamber expertly painted with a complex, energetic battle scene. The larger figure is most likely the war lord, seen scaling a ladder held by ropes at the top by supernatural figures with bird heads and crab-like legs on their backs. The war lord is accompanied by other warriors and the supernaturals. In very good, intact condition, the rim chipped, some surface erosion especially on the bottom left of the battle scene.
