An Ibibio Mask
Nigeria, early to mid 20th century

Type known as "Idiok Ekpo," with characteristic curving horns at top, lower jaw separately carved and attached with twine so that it would clap up and down when in motion. This mask is large and deeply carved for the type, with a patina of age and use, encrusted on forehead with hardened substances. In very good condition, appropriate for its age, use, and materials; lower protruding cicatrix mark missing on right side.
