Description
A Chancay Effigy Vessel (chuchimilco)Peru, circa 1100-1400 AD
A terrific example of the type, with a bird perched on the figure's proper left shoulder. The figure has a finely modeled head with large earring and headband ornament. Made from buff earthenware covered with cream slip, with black paint depicting the tunic and highlighting the arms and facial features. Also painted in black and cream is a large textile carrying bag suspended from straps over the shoulders. A rope or spear in low relief extends from the figure's hands up to the bird. It is suggested that this represents a hunter holding his spear thrower, wearing his coca bag over his shoulders. He has his pet bird on his shoulder. In very good condition, repairs over cracks with some restoration, minor scratches and erosion to the slip and black paint.
Provenance:
Acquired by the current owner from a New York collection in 2006
Height: 17 ½ inches
