PROVENANCE:
Hargesheimer & Günther, Düsseldorf, Germany, September 17-19, 2015, lot 1609;
Private collection, Chicago, Illinois, acquired from the above.

Ernst Deger accompanied his Düsseldorf colleagues, Franz Ittenbach and the Müller brothers, on a sojourn to Italy from 1837 to 1841 to prepare for their execution of a large fresco cycle at St. Apollinaris in Remagen. On this trip, Deger was singled out by the head of the Nazarenes, Friedrich Overbeck, as an especially promising and religiously intense young artist. Overbeck appreciated Deger's direct and simple style, his rich and harmonious color, and powers of characterization. Indeed, in this work, Deger used his own likeness for the face of Christ.

Condition Report*: Unframed. Original unlined canvas. Recently cleaned, conserved and revarnished by the Conservation Center, Chicago. Under UV examination one can see that the work was selectively cleaned of its old varnish in the areas of the face and garment at the nape of the neck. The old varnish fluoresces a deeper green under UV and covers all the background and the lower part of the figure. Under the varnish there appear to be earlier campaigns of touch up. The recent inpaint occurs in the following locations: 2 1/2 inch line across right brow; tiny area in middle of forehead; dime-size spot near rigth temple; T-shaped area measuring about an inch on figure's neck; scattered spots in right background fluorescing light blue (water based archival pigments), as well at at top edge and a 2 inch spot about 4 inches from the right lower corner of the painting. There is also strengthening between the fingers of the blessing hand.
