Private collection, Chicago, Illinois, acquired from the above.

Viennese painter Maria Schoffmann was the daughter of history painter Wilhelm S. Schoffmann, who was also her first teacher. She studied at the Vienna Academy of the Fine Arts, establishing herself as a talented copyist of works by Christian Seybold, Rembrandt, van Dyck, Dürer, and many others. She produced religious paintings of her own invention, both on a small scale like the present work, which has affinities with the style of the Düsseldorf School painters, and also large-scale altarpieces.
