Stephen Powell earned a B.A. in Painting and Ceramics at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, where he later taught and founded the glass program, and a M.F.A. in Ceramics from Louisiana State University. Powell is known for his very colorful and formally challenging and often large-scale blown glass sculptures. His work has been exhibited internationally and is in many major museum collections including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Corning Museum of Art, New York; the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.
