Description

Grandma Moses (American, 1860-1961)
On the Lake in Summer, 1942
Worsted wool
8-1/2 x 20-3/4 inches (21.6 x 52.7 cm)

PROVENANCE:
The artist;
John and Stella Shanahan, Bergenfield, New Jersey, gift from the above, circa 1943;
By descent to the present owner.

On the Lake in Summer has been in the Shanahan family, cousins of the artist, one year following its creation in 1942. Grandma Moses (née Shanahan) was first cousins with the present owner's grandfather, John James Shanahan. Many of the artist's rare worsted wool works were made specifically as gifts for friends and family, and On the Lake in Summer is no exception, having been made as a 10-year anniversary gift for John and his wife Stella. Aside from the sentimental value, the subject matter reflects the artist's awareness of her cousin's lifelong love affair with Lake George.

The present work was displayed in the Shanahan apartment in Bergenfield, N.J., until Stella Shanahan passed away in the 1980s, at which time the work was passed down to the next generation. Heritage is honored to present On the Lake in Summer to market for the very first time.

The work has been assigned the number Kallir 61W and will be included in the forthcoming update to the Grandma Moses catalogue raisonné.
