According to Professor Theresa Leininger-Miller, author of New Negro Artists in Paris: African American Painters and Sculptors in the City of Lights, the present sculpture could be Woman of Martinique, which in her preliminary list of all known work by Savage, dates to circa 1930. The signature is consistent with the one Savage used on a souvenir version of Lift Every Voice and Sing, and the modeling at the bottom of the figure is similar to the artist's other hollow-body figures. While the sculpture is rather different from Savage's typical style, she notes that the artist was experimental while abroad.
We wish to thank Professor Theresa Leininger-Miller for her assistance cataloguing this work.
Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000.
