Two Gables, a grand Georgian style home in Lake Forest, Illinois was renovated in 1928 by David Adler with interiors by the legendary designer Frances Elkins. The rooms were classically inspired and as was typical of Elkins work in the late 1920s and early 30s, had elements of modernism primarily through the incorporation of decorative elements either inspired or directly created by artists she worked closely with in Paris, most notably Jean-Michel Frank and Alberto and Diego Giacometti. Elkins utilized Frank's work quite often during this period, and the present light, commissioned from Frank for the house, is characteristic of the custom lighting and architectural elements that were executed in France at her request. Frank's simple suspension light quietly bridges several styles at once, with it's curved inverted dome form and subtle scalloped edges. Plaster, a material used widely during this period, allows for a softening of the edges and certainly works to balance color and light in the conservatory of the house where it was installed and remained for nearly a century. Elkins held this design in such high regard, that a similar light was installed in her own office at Fisherman's Wharf. Being offered for the first time now, this rare light is an important example of Jean-Michel Frank's mastery of style and form, and more so, represents the impact that the Transatlantic transfer of influence had in supporting the lives and work of the creative communities in America and Europe.
