LITERATURE:
R. Elzea, John Sloan's Oil Paintings: A Catalogue Raisonné, Part Two, Newark, Delaware, 1991, p. 286, no. 774, illustrated.
"In his review of exhibition #1926-10, the writer for the Santa Fe New Mexican found 'the last picture is a fitting climax. It is called -'Wash Day,' the day of terror in all households. But terror is changed into pleasure, 'joy comes out of gloom' as the clairvoyant would say. Here is a husky woman in a blue dress competent to do washing for a family of twelve, and then not too tired to walk a mile to the movies. Sloan, with his accurate, reportorial eye, has caught the peculiar humorous vision of this type of figure bending over a wash tub. The skirt is a bit short--so are the stockings. There are other women standing around, wringing out the clothes or hanging them out to dry in the breeze. Sloan already has been besieged to know the name of this washwoman. She is in demand. It is said Sloan painted this picture form life on Palace Avenue--somewhere." (October 1, 1926, as quoted in R. Elzea, John Sloan's Oil Paintings: A Catalogue Raisonné, Part Two, Newark, Delaware, 1991, p. 286)
