There is a charming naivety and freshness, a unique sense of the times incorporated in this painting. Color was used as a way of branding, symbolically unifying both art and the nation. This piece came from Vietnam veteran who brought several pieces back after his first tour of duty.

The flag of Communist South Vietnam between 1968 and 1975 was similar to that of today, but with the lower half colored blue. This blue, along with the familiar red and yellow, are the most dominant colors used in paintings of this time, with red the most widely used of all because of its vibrancy and emotional impact. Giu Lai Mai Truong Cho Con Em translates roughly as "Keep the school open for the kids."
