The author of these two plein-air figure studies, probably painted in Italy judging from the style of architecture depicted on the reverse of one, was British artist Edwin Bale. A landscape and genre painter who painted a great deal in Italy (notably Florence, Rome and Bordighera), Bale was also an art critic as well as the art director of Cassell and Co., Ltd, London, which published the influential monthly art periodical, The Magazine of Art. He is best-known as a watercolorist, a quality that can be discerned in his handling of oil in these two panels.
