Description
FRENCH SCHOOL (LATE 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY)French Country Landscape with Houses in the Distance, circa 1890-1910
Oil on canvas
14 x 20 inches (35.6 x 50.8 cm)
Title and signature on verso are painted out but are still partially discernable, appearing to read: Paysage de ... / [indecipherable signature with flourishes] / Paris
This unsigned painting has stylistic and thematic similarities with the work of George Hitchcock. The high horizon line, a compositional device derived from Japanese print sources, was favored by many French and American painters during the period 1890-1910.
Condition Report*:
Under UV examination, a number of small areas of conservation fluoresce. One is in the sky at upper left, a dime-sized spot in the ground in lower left quadrant, and a few scattered tiny specks as well as very minor inpainting along extreme perimeter to mask some frame abrasion. Paint film in very good stable condition with little evidence of craquelure. Original unlined canvas with perimeter extensions of newer canvas, which wrap around newer stretcher bars. Framed Dimensions 20 X 26 Inches
