Description

Red Beryl (Exceptional crystal)
Ruby Violet Claims, Beaver Co., Utah, USA
5.2 x 3.2 x 2.1 cm (2.1 x 1.3 x 0.8 in)

Red Beryl is easily one of the rarest varieties of Beryl, and is only found in one small area in the entirety of the world. The primary crystal of this Red Beryl specimen is approximately 2 centimeters long and 1.2 centimeters wide, which, for this species, is a very significant size, as the vast majority of this species barely crawl past a few millimeters, and are often heavily-included or broken. Not only is the mass of the crystal important, but so is the quality: all of the crystal's faces are glassy, and the edges are remarkably sharp. The color is a deep reddish-purple, gemmier at the termination and deepening towards the center of the prism. Associated with a few tiny accent crystals, this Red Beryl is situated on a white rhyolite matrix, and stands up well on its own without a base. This specimen has one repair at a natural fracture line, and two very minor restorations. It is, nevertheless, exceptionally beautiful and well colored.
