Description

Quartz with Chevron Phantoms
Madagascar
20.0 cm in diameter (7.87 in)

Situated within the center of this Quartz sphere is a singular, very large "phantom," or a thin inclusion that mirrors the termination shape of Quartz. This results in a flat and extremely sharp triangular phantom, with a specular brown color that is most likely caused by the iron oxides that are common in this locality. When you view the specimen from above, this massive inclusion displays an approximately 150 degree angle, mirrored by a further accompaniment of repeating phantoms, that are progressively fainter and more subtle. Towards the edge of the Quartz sphere is another occurrence of phantoms, this time created by deep green Chlorite inclusions, rather than iron oxide. The shape of this second phantom is at the same angle as the larger one, but in this case, there are many more layers, repeating in a pattern that is often referred to as a "Chevron" phantom pattern.

Ex. Rob Sielecki collection.
