GALL
c. 1883
Gall (Pizi), Hunkpapa Lakota. Cabinet card with imprint of David Francis Barry, at his West Superior, Wisconsin, studio. The war chief, born in 1840, is shown at about the age of forty-three. Of this portrait Elizabeth B. Custer, whose celebrated husband Gall had helped to overrun, wrote: "Dear Mr. Barry, Painful as it is for me to look upon the pictured face of an Indian, I never dreamed in all my life there could be so fine a specimen of a warrior in all the tribes as Chief Gall." Later, he was Chief Justice of the tribal court at Standing Rock. He died in 1894.
