RAIN-IN-THE-FACE, RED CLOUD, AND RUNNING ANTELOPEc. 1885 - 1897
Three portraits of Lakota men by David F. Barry, arranged in a single walnut frame with elegant, stamped-metal title plaques. Each silver-gelatin image has been trimmed.
Rain-in-the-Face (Ite Omagu), an Hunkpapa prominent in the fighting during the Battle of Little Bighorn, is at the left in an 1890s portrait. The Oglala war chief Red Cloud (Mahpiya Luta), nearly blind, is shown at center wearing a beaded shirt and eagle feather headdress in an 1897 portrait made when he visited Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. The Hunkpapa Head Chief Running Antelope (Tatoka Inyanke) is at the right wearing a silver kerchief slide in a portrait made at Standing Rock, D.T.
