Bold patterning in shield decoration is calculated to strike fear into an opponent. The knowledge that his shield reinforces his aggressiveness serves to bolster the courage of the warrior carrying the shield. Here the X-like pattern was lightly cut into the shield and then filled in with a loose low-relief grid, after which the major form outlines were heightened with white pigment for carrying power. The ties visible on the front of the shield anchor a holding strap. There is a large old loss of 7 ¾ inches in the lower proper left 3 ½ inches from the edge, along with some use nicks and abrasions. Otherwise the condition is very good.
