Description
Tunic PanelHuari
A.D. 600 - 900
Feathers sewn to cloth backing
Height 24 3/4 in. Width 30 3/4 in.
This bold image formed either the front or back of a tunic. The loosely woven textile base is completely covered by the feather design, executed primarily in macaw and parrot feathers. The focal motif on the blue ground is a yellow, eight-rayed face with large staring eyes and bared teeth. Salmon-orange feathers outline this central "sun", frame the eyes, and suggest a tongue between the rows of teeth. Four squares in the same salmon-orange frame the rayed image, and two similarly colored rectangular tabs connect with the outer edges just above the half-way point. Other than a normal amount of feather loss, the condition is good.
