A native of Utah and a BYU professor, John Telford has been taking landscape photographs for more than forty years. He became interested in photography while on a mission in the Samoan Islands and studied photography at BYU before opening a gallery in Salt Lake City. Telford was influenced by landscape photographers such as Edward Weston and Wynn Bullock and had the opportunity to study with Ansel Adams for a short time in Yosemite. Telford captures the fleeting experiences of the natural world, such as landforms affected by passing light or changing weather. He also photographs Mormon architecture, which for him is similar to landscape photography since he also explores the play of light and weather on the beautiful historic buildings. For Telford photography is about "beauty and enriching the soul, as opposed to the dark and perverse things in our society." He makes photographs that reflect his spirituality to bring peace to those who collect them.
