Not all Azurite specimens are a deep blue-black. Sometimes the mineral forms under a different set of conditions and the result can be like this: bright, intense blue 'velvet', very much like the habit Malachite often takes. At this location the Azurite seems to have started out like the normal variety with discrete, spear-shaped crystals growing slowly on the ocher matrix. Then the chemistry shifted to one favoring rapid deposition which resulted in lighter colored micro-crystals being formed. Whatever the cause, the result is a lighter, more uniform deposit. There are a few missing Azurite 'spears', otherwise the condition is fine to excellent. 4 5/8 x 2 7/8 x 1 ½ deep.
