LeRoy Neiman (American, 1921-2012)
Femlin, Playboy cartoon, 1983
Ink on paper
7-1/2 x 7 inches (19.1 x 17.8 cm) (sheet)
Signed and dated lower left: Leroy Neiman / '83

LeRoy Neiman's iconic and mischievous Femlin first appeared in Playboy in August 1955. Nieman, who was doing women's high fashion drawings at the time, met Hugh Hefner while he was employed as a copywriter at a Chicago department store in the early 1950s and together they innovated a bold, mischievous avatar of uninhibited freedom which would appear in the pages of the magazine for decades.

Here shown with Art Paul's now-timeless icon of the Playboy Bunny, this 1983 piece synthesizes the two most instantly recognizable images to emerge from the pages of the magazine.
