Description
Amber with InclusionsBurmite
Cretaceous
Hukawng Valley, Myitkyina District, Kachin State, Myanmar
0.56 x 0.48 x 0.18 inches (1.41 x 1.23 x 0.46 cm)
This specimen of Burmite Amber may be relatively diminutive, weighing 0.41 grams, but features three beautifully preserved spiders as the primary inclusions. This golden-yellow dollop of fossilized tree resin dates to the Cretaceous some 99 million years ago and also offers an abundance of dark "detritus" materials inside the hardened suspension alongside an unidentified beetle. Spiders are solitary creatures, as a rule, so it's rare to see more than one in a single small piece of Amber like this one. These may have been a social group of spiders, as some modern spiders are known to engage in social behavior. Under magnification, the exquisite detail of the fine hairs on the legs and abdomen of the ancient arachnids is crystal clear. This is an excellent specimen with several fantastic remnants from this distant past that coincide with the present.
