Description

AMERICAN ARTIST (20th Century)
Honey Gal, paperback cover, 1958
Tempera on masonite
14.5 x 18 in.
Not signed

From the Estate of Charles Martignette.

This painting was actually first published as half of the cover for Universal Giant-G8, The Lusty Land by Valerie Taylor (1953): "Even a Hired Hand Needs a Woman". It is its second publication, however, that earns this painting icon status among vintage paperback and pulp art collectors. With a few slight changes, most notably the wardrobe of the man and a subtle alteration of hairstyle and pigmentation for the woman, you have the cover for Beacon B160, Honey Gal, (1958), the highly collectible paperback original by famed mystery writer Charles Willeford: "He Was White. She Was Beautiful-And Bad", "A Starkly Naked Novel of Sin and Segregation". This is one of the most iconic paperback cover images we've had the pleasure to offer.
