Three Fish (1946) by Cuban painter Antonio Gattorno is an important work that reflects both his connection to Cuban identity and his evolution within the modernist movement. Together, fish and eggs in Gattorno's work can be seen as representations of life's full cycle, from birth and potential (egg) to sustenance and resilience (fish). These symbols capture both individual and cultural resilience, as Gattorno used his art to navigate the themes of identity, survival, and renewal, drawing from personal, cultural, and universal wellsprings of meaning. Through these recurring motifs, Gattorno's work invites viewers to consider the nature of life, growth, and the enduring strength within cultural heritage.
