A Jean Puiforcat Mahogany and Silver Tray, Mexico City, Mexico, 1942-1945Marks: (J-horseshoe-P), STERLING, JEAN PUIFORCAT, MADE IN MEXICO
2 x 25-5/8 x 12-1/4 inches (5.1 x 65.1 x 31.1 cm)
The French silversmith Jean Puiforcat, recognized widely for his Art Deco designs characterized by clean, geometric lines, fled German-occupied France in 1941 and established a workshop in Mexico City. His work during this period is marked MADE IN MEXICO, as is the present example, which is sympathetic to the work of Taxco silversmith William Spratling. However, there is no solid knowledge that they met.
