Description
Fossil StingrayHeliobatis radians
Eocene, Green River Formation
Wyoming
The renowned Green River Formation of Wyoming is known worldwide for producing numerous quality lacustrine fossil specimens, primarily fossil fish. Every so often, diggers in their quarries will come across something less common, and intrinsically more valuable, such as this fossil stingray. Actually a freshwater variety, this cartilaginous creature has been very well preserved in a shale block from this locality which was once, not surprisingly, a series of freshwater lakes 40 to 50 million years ago. This fine fossil exhibits the typical stingray shape with a round, flat, disk radiating from the head and pectoral fins. Two stinger "barbs" are visible on this large specimen, which has been painstakingly restored to reveal all that the sedimentary "varves" have been hidden for millions of years. This rock has been reinforced to allow for framing or wall hanging. In addition to the obvious focal point of the stingray, a large fossil fish is also clearly visible on the plate. The fossil stingray is a Heliobatis radians, and the fossil fish is a Knightia eocaena, which also happens to be the State Fossil of Wyoming.
Overall Measurements: 19.4 x 13.3 x 0.6 inches (49.4 x 34.0 x 1.6 cm)
