Whether that is the simple fact of the matter or not, the image certainly speaks powerfully of both exclusion and temptation. In Killip's hands, another everyday scene becomes a narrative drama, a chapter in a larger tale, as detail piles upon detail -- the lonely child, the crowd inside, the mysterious, blurred caller, even the graffiti-strewn alley, which he was so right to include in the picture frame."
