Born in Cambridge, England, Charles Smerdon-Roe was a jeweler and goldsmith by trade, as well as a gifted amateur photographer, who spent his spare time capturing the landscape and inhabitants of the surrounding countryside with his camera. Smerdon Roe exhibited two works at the Royal Photographic Society, in 1891 The Sedge Gatherers in 1895 and A Fishing Cottage, both critically well-received and in a style strongly reminiscent of Roe's better-known compatriot Peter Henry Emerson, whose treatise, Naturalistic Photography for Students of the Art, published in 1889, was hugely influential on him.
