LITERATURE:
K. Asano, Snow Country, Kyoto, Self Published, 1989, for many of the images.
For three years in the 1950s, Kiichi Asano traveled to the Japanese Noto, Echigo, and Tohoku regions to photograph landscapes covered with snow. A resident of temperate Kyoto, where it rarely snows, Asano was fascinated by these wintry landscapes and the people who lived there. Many of the works are reproduced in his book Snow Country, self-published in 1989, whose cover, Himi, a haunting image of an isolated figure pulling a cart through the bleak winter scene, is one of the images in this compelling group.
