Description
Native CopperBroken Hill, Broken Hill District, Yancowinna Co., New South Wales, Australia
"A two and a half inch cluster if [sic] intergrown copper wires. Bought this specimen when Cal Graeber sold Marion Godshaw's collection."
- Rock H. Currier
Besides lending the name to one of the most successful mining companies in the world: BHP, now known as Broken Hill Proprietary, has been the source for so many exquisite examples of crystallized minerals. A casual stroll through the book: Minerals of Broken Hill is guaranteed to delight the eye and incite mineralogical avarice. As a general rule, Broken Hill Native Copper specimens are actually somewhat rare in comparison to things like Rhodonite, etc. Here we have a densely intergrown mass of fine Native Copper wires with no apparent matrix. It probably was formed in an open fissure or cavity. It has the typical patina of older copper specimens.
Overall Measurements: 2.4 x 1.4 x 1.2 inches (6.0 x 3.5 x 3.0 cm)
Weight: 31.4 grams
Offered at no reserve
Provenance: Purchased from Cal Graeber, Ex Marion Godshaw Collection [RHC #5554, acquired 1990]
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
