Libyan Desert Glass - 1,292.1 GramsLibyan Desert Glass Area
Great Sand Sea
Western Desert, Egypt
Formed in the intense heat of a meteorite impact approximately 28.5 million years ago, this striking specimen of Libyan Desert Glass is an exceptional relic of both terrestrial and extraterrestrial history. When the bolide struck what is now the Western Desert of Egypt, the searing temperatures-estimated to have exceeded 1,470°C-instantly vitrified the desert sand, producing a natural tektite and spreading fragments across an area of over 4,000 square kilometers. Weighing 1,292.1 grams, this is one of the largest and finest examples of Libyan Desert Glass ever offered at auction. The specimen exhibits a lustrous, medium-green coloration and is remarkably pristine, with a smoothly curved top surface bearing regmaglypt-like impressions, evocative of aerodynamic shaping during flight. In contrast, the flat underside is more porous, with sharper, angular edges-offering a clear record of the contrasting forces at play during its formation. Embedded within the smooth surface are small white spheres of cristobalite, a high-temperature form of quartz that can only form above 1,470°C, further supporting the material's meteoritic origin. Adding to its uniqueness, the specimen features a natural perforation, with a larger opening on the flat side tapering upward-an unusual and aesthetically compelling feature in a piece of this size. Libyan Desert Glass has captivated humankind for millennia. The ancient Egyptians recognized its rarity and symbolic power, most notably using it in a carved scarab found in one of King Tutankhamun's amulets-a testament to its cultural and spiritual significance. This specimen offers a rare opportunity to acquire a museum-grade piece of impact glass, both scientifically important and visually extraordinary-a tangible fragment of deep planetary history shaped by cosmic violence and admired by ancient civilization.
