Description

Sopot Meteorite
Chondrite, H5
Dolj, Romania - (44° 25'N, 23° 30'E)
Witnessed Fall: 1927

This unique space rock represents a witnessed fall that occurred in Romania in 1927. A Chondrite, H5, by classification, this variety is known as Sopot. This specimen consists of two pieces that have been put back together, forming a significant end cut weighing 103 grams, with a mix of fusion crust and revealed interior composition. The exterior is "burnt" brown, while its granular interior is gray, with golden flecks. An interesting note to this specimen concerns the fact that the patriarch of the consigning family named, Parvulesco, had a minor planet (asteroid) named in his honor and in honor of his family. (2331) Parvulesco likely had nothing to do with the Sopot Meteorite, but Romanian Professor Constantin Parvulesco surely had a hand in this example of the uncommon meteorite being here. The fissure where the two pieces of rock were reattached is the secondary visual characteristic of the Romanian export worthy of a notation. The date of the fall, especially considering it was an observed event, makes it a very historical meteorite.
Measurements: 1.96 x 1.73 x 1.31 inches (4.97 x 4.39 x 3.34 cm), weighs 102.6 grams
