Description

NWA 13119 Lunar Meteorite
Lunar (feldspathic breccia)
Mauritania
Found: 2019

The lunar meteorite known as NWA 13119 was found in Mauritania in 2019. The "classic" feldspathic breccia is visually striking, featuring numerous lighter-colored clasts within a dark body color. This very singular specimen - if for no other reason than the immense size - is truly incredible. Weighing a stout 3.6 kilograms (7.9 pounds), this is simply an enormous piece of the Moon! There are really not enough superlatives to describe this complete individual. Nearly 10 inches (25 cm) long, this colossal specimen exhibits a phenomenal planetary texture over its entirety and is captivating from every side and angle. Impactful for both its appearance and, possibly, more importantly, for what it represents, this is a truly "one-of-a-kind" lunar meteorite given its combination of aesthetics, size, and natural sculptural beauty. This offering is replete with whitish and brownish-green clasts over its charcoal gray exterior, which is complex and, fittingly, displays a large number of relatively deep craters populated by its clasts. Legendary research scientist Dr. Carl B. Agee, Director, Institute of Meteoritics at the University of New Mexico, classified the NWA 13119 variety of lunar meteorites. While there are a considerable number of lunar meteorites, examples of this size, quality and rarity are incredibly uncommon. The singular nature of this obviously museum-quality specimen places it in the upper echelon of any lunar meteorite variety.
Measurements: 9.84 x 4.92 x 4.13 inches (25.00 x 12.50 x 10.50 cm), weighs 3,576.3 grams (7.88 pounds)
