Description

Calcite on Sphalerite
Elmwood Mine, Carthage
Smith Co.
Tennessee, USA

This dramatic Elmwood specimen features well-formed, lustrous scalenohedral Calcite crystals. The twinned Calcite crystals are perched on a metallic "Ruby Jack" Sphalerite matrix and display textbook golden coloration, form, and gemminess. The Calcites are doubly-terminated, with dozens of smaller terminations creating an outstanding example with excellent luster. The main crystal measures 7.08 inches (18 cm) long and should be viewed from different angles. The matrix is further sprinkled with hundreds of doubly-terminated gemmy, golden micro Calcite crystals. The Sphalerite and Calcite matrix appears as if in movement and consists of hundreds of ants carrying the giant Calcite crystals back to their nest. Elmwood is considered one of the best localities for Calcite crystals, and this example reinforces that statement. There is a very small chip to the Calcite termination, but, otherwise, this significant example is in excellent condition. The closing of the mine was the end of an era, and minerals from this renowned mine are now becoming harder and harder to find making this a unique acquisition opportunity.
Measurements: 9.45 x 8.66 x 5.91 inches (24.00 x 22.00 x 15.00 cm)
