Description

Baryte & Fluorite on Sphalerite
Elmwood Mine, Carthage
Smith Co.
Tennessee, USA

This is a classic Elmwood combination specimen showcasing three of the four minerals representative of the mine. The matrix is a plate of dark, metallic, reddish-gray "Ruby Jack" Sphalerite crystals of resplendent luster and good form, which hosts dozens of well-formed purple cubic Fluorite crystals measuring up to 0.77 inches (1.96 cm), with gemmy faces and interesting stepped growth features. The pièce de résistance however is the giant spherical bladed Baryte cluster. It resembles a scoop of vanilla ice cream placed on top of a cone with smaller scoops melting down the front. The main Baryte "ball" measures 6.69 x 6.49 inches (17 x 16.5 cm). The contrast of the off-white Baryte against the regal purple Fluorite and the metallic Sphalerite, with orange-red flashes, is awe-inspiring. The back evidences contact, but there is really no noticeable damage for a plate of this size. Originating from the famous, now closed, Elmwood Mine, this represents finite material and is in excellent condition.
Measurements: 12.60 x 8.27 x 4.33 inches (32.00 x 21.00 x 11.00 cm)
