Description

Trilobite Fossil
Neoasaphus plautini
Middle Ordovician
Wolchow River, Russia

With a classic caramel-colored preserved shell, this Russian Trilobite dating to the Ordovician is an example of Neoasaphus plautini in matrix. This specimen features a mix of dull and lustrous areas over its slightly mottled light brownish surface. Several minor patches of repair are visible under an ultraviolet light but not easily seen with the naked eye. Measuring nearly 5 inches (12.7 cm) long, this segmented prehistoric marine creature has a well-defined cephalon, thorax, and pygidium, or head, body, and tail, respectively, with a nicely defined trio of lobes running vertically across the ancient shape. The specimen boasts two exceptional eye stalks and rests on a rugged, granular matrix. One ideal display piece, this fossil on a mountainous rocky background is a little rustic, adding to its appeal.
Overall Measurements: 9.84 x 6.10 x 2.36 inches (25.00 x 15.50 x 6.00 cm)
