Description

Emerald in Matrix
Kagem Emerald Mine, Kafubu Emerald District
Ndola, Ndola District, Copperbelt Province
Zambia

The Kagem Mine is the largest producer of Emerald in Africa, where it is reportedly responsible for 15-20% of the world's Emerald production. The specimen seen here is a cool specimen because it not only displays four sizable Emerald prisms, it also incorporates minerals that illustrate the interesting geology of the mine. The hexagonal Emerald crystals are embedded in massive Smoky Quartz with associated Biotite mica schist and metallic, platy crystals of either Graphite (most likely) or Molybdenite (less likely). The 'star' of the piece is a double terminated, translucent Emerald prism 0.75 inch (2 cm) long and 0.5 inch (1.2 cm) in diameter. It is attractively perched on the smoky Quartz matrix. There are three other large crystals are lower down and one is to the side of the specimen. Color is medium green and luster is glassy.
Measurements: 3.95 x 2.83 x 2.44 inches (10.05 x 7.2 x 6.2 cm)
