Description

Baryte, Sphalerite, Calcite & Dolomite
Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District
Smith County
Tennessee, USA

It is uncommon for more than two of the six or so specimen minerals of the Elmwood Mine to form together on a single piece. On display in this combination work are five of the local favorites. As a foundation, there is gray siliceous limestone inter-grown with two dark spherical groups of lustrous Sphalerite crystals. Overcoating the free surfaces of that limestone are dozens of tiny but well-formed, white Dolomite rhombs. Attached to one side of the Sphalerite pair are four globular clusters of pale yellow Baryte in a granular sort of crystallinity normally seen in old snow. Off to one end are a small group of light purple Fluorite cubes and at the other end is classic example of a double terminated Calcite twin rendered in the warm golden orange tones so emblematic of Elmwood. There are some very minor dings to the Calcite but no evil cleavages or other unpleasantness. Although none of the components are above average, the combination of so many of the areas signature minerals makes the aggregate sort of a sampler for the district. And besides, it looks like a duck; who can ask for more. This specimen comes with a custom acrylic base.
